Steps to make Easy Oyakodon:
- Add Dashi, sugar, Sake, soy sauce and Mirin in a pan. Heat until boiling.
- Add onion and cook for a minute at medium heat.
- Add chicken pieces to the pan and cook until the meat is cooked through.
- Beat egg in a small bowl and pour over the chicken and onion. Cover and cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Slide egg and chicken with sauce over rice in a bowl. Sprinkle with green onion.
The term oyakodon was coined from the words oya (lit. parent) and ko (lit. child), which is a witty remark on the main ingredients — chicken being the parent, and egg being the child. Oyako Donburi recipe … oh how I love you. The sweet and salty taste of the donburi is the one of my most favorite recipes from very own retired chef (i.e. father-in-law). Oyako literally means parents and children in Japanese and is a reference to two of the dish's main ingredients: chicken and egg. Oyako is a donburi, also called a don, which means rice bowl.
